The Design-A-Bag Competition this year saw record levels in terms of both the number of entries and the quality of artwork.
“We are very pleased with the growing interest and talent that Design-A-Bag has attracted. Through our unique and easily accessible online platform, Design Access, our competition event has enabled us to connect with creative young and established designers from around the world,” said Perrine Ardouin, founder of the competition, who is also events organiser for Fashion Access and all APLF events.
As before, Design-A-Bag divided entrants into two groups: design students and full-time design professionals, with separate awards to each group in each of the four designated design categories.
Jayne Esteve Cure, founder of Paris-based firm Jayne Esteve Cure Fashion Consulting, who reviewed and pre-selected the entries, noted “the importance of transformation and personalisation throughout the submissions for all categories.” Leather - patent or lambskin - was widely used in conjunction with other fabrics, she added.
This year’s design categories were:
FIT - sporty and ergonomic outdoor carry-all, light, high performance for the environment.
PARTY - evening bag for fun and special occasions.
THE MALEBAG - bag for men, handy, practical, long lasting and multi-functional.
DREAM TEENS - bag for teenagers, stylish, colourful, graphic and decorative.
Mary Yan Yan Chan of Design-A-Bag sponsors Peclers Paris, who was also on the panel of judges, singled out the FIT category as being particularly innovative and noted that there were more shape designs this year.
Judges awarded points on the basis of design originality, choice of materials, colours and trims and practicality.
Altogether there were 333 entries and, most encouragingly, they came from 46 different countries and regions, including Ghana, Bulgaria, Estonia, Iran and Qatar. Hong Kong led the way with the most participants (71), India and Indonesia recorded 27 and 26 respectively, followed by US (23), UK (22), Hungary (16), Korea (12), Poland (11).
The overall winner and category winners will be announced at the Design-A-Bag Awards Presentation, held after the APLF Press Conference on 31 March, 11:00am. For more information on the winners and their artworks, please refer to the Design-A-Bag Competition 2009 booklet to be distributed after the awards presentation or visit the website after the event www.designaccess-fa.com
